It is estimated that there are as many as 200,000 people with lymphoedema in the UK.
The condition occurs when there is a failure in the lymphatic system causing swelling and discomfort in the affected area. In the UK one of the commonest causes of the condition is cancer and its treatments.
Although lymphoedema cannot be cured there is much that can be done to control the condition and relieve the symptoms. Support for patients and advice regarding skin care is paramount and Complementary Therapists may be ideally located to provide this support.
Who May Benefit from the Workshop?
Whereas simple oedema may benefit from massage, this may cause symptoms to deteriorate in lymphoedema. Equally pressure techniques and some essential oils may further damage the weakened lymphatic system making the long term outcome for such patients worse.
The workshop is comprised of a mixture of both practical and theory sessions. No previous experience is required but delegates must have a diploma in a bodywork therapy such as aromatherapy, reflexology or massage.
Topics covered include
- Review of the lymphatic system
- What is lymphoedema?
- How is its management different to oedema?
- Identifying the risks
- Advice to prevent the onset of symptoms
- The cornerstones of lymphoedema management
- The role of the Complementary Therapist in lymphoedema management
- Practical session – Creaming technique
- Practical session – Exercise
- Demonstration – Simple lymphatic drainage
